Kim Si-min held Jinju with 3,800 soldiers and saved the entire Jeolla province
First Battle of Jinju, 1592. If Jinju falls, Japan gets access to Jeolla — Korea's breadbasket and the last major unoccupied province. Kim Si-min had 3,800 troops. Japan sent 20,000+. He held the fortress for five days of absolute carnage. Used every trick in the book: boiling water, rocks, early gunpowder weapons. On the last day, a bullet hit him in the forehead. He died. But Jinju held. The Japanese retreated. Jeolla was saved, which meant Korea still had a food supply and a base for resistance. Kim Si-min literally died saving an entire province's worth of people and he's somehow not as famous as he should be.
