Thousands of farmers armed with bamboo spears marched against corrupt officials and foreign interference. They actually WON the first battle at Hwangtohyeon and took the city of Jeonju. The government panicked so hard they asked Qing China for help, which triggered Japanese intervention, which started the Sino-Japanese War.
