Set in 1457, the film follows the deposed young King Danjong (played by Park Ji-hoon) exiled to a remote village in Yeongwol, and the village headman Eom Heung-do (played by Yoo Hae-jin) who becomes his unlikely guardian. Their bond deepens over four months as the former king adjusts to life as an ordinary person. The film became a massive hit, surpassing 16 million viewers to rank second in Korean cinema history.
